Each week, the entire staff of PhillyD12.com will come up with 3 or 4 games that we will recommend as our weekly “Games to Watch”. Sometimes the games will be PCL games, sometimes they will be Pub games, and sometimes they will be a combination of games from the two leagues. Below are our picks for the most interesting matchups for Week 1.
Week 1: Games to Watch
St Joseph Prep at Parkland – Friday, 8/29 – 7:00pm – Parkland HS - Prep usually plays a demanding pre-season schedule. This year is no different, with Prep traveling up to Parkland to take on the 2007 PA Eastern bracket champ. Some people believe this could be an early peek at a potential week 15 showdown.
Roman Catholic vs West Catholic – Saturday, 8/30 – 12:00pm - Wildwood, NJ - This year’s “War at the Shore” will be the first time that both Roman and West are defending champions in their respective divisions. Roman won fairly easily last year, but West gave them a real good game to open up the 2007 campaign. This year, West enters the 2008 season with higher expectations in the AA division than Roman has in the AAAA. Expect a real good game, which is worth the gas money to drive to Wildwood.
Frankford at Hatboro-Horsham – Friday, 8/29 – 7:00pm – Hatboro-Horsham HS - With former Frankford player, Dave Sanderson, listed as the head coach, I’m sure this game would have been a thrill to coach for Dave. But, due to personal issues, coach Sanderson is taking the season off and will not be coaching in this game. But, Frankford will see how they stack up against one of the up and coming SOL teams.
Norristown at Northeast – Friday, 8/29 – 6:00pm – Northeast HS - Neither of these teams are the best in their respective leagues, but a 6 point loss at Norristown last year put a bitter taste into the mouths of many of the players and coaches at Northeast. This season, Norristown will travel into the city to get a taste of NE Philly hospitality. The Vikings are hoping for a real good season this year, and they know that this first game will tell them if they are on track or not.
